Zenxin organic vegetables at wholesale market
March 5, 2007The Sunday Times reported yesterday that Zenxin Argiculture, a grower of organic vegetables based in Kluang, Johor, has set up an outlet at the Pasis Panjang vegetable wholesale centre in Singapore.
Zenxin hadd actually already been offering an online service, with free delivery for purchases above $50, for some time. With the Pasir Panjang store, hopefully prices will be a lot more affordable.
I go up to JB quite regularly and have been buying their veggies from Jusco suparmarket there. Prices, quality and product range are good. In JB suparmarkets, many organic vegetables can be bought for less than RM3 (approx S$1.30) per packet – cabbage, spinach, kangkong, chye sim, long beans, lady’s fingers, eggplant, cucumber, Japanese cucumber, cherry tomatoes, etc. Add another RM 1 or 2 and your options increase. I ever bought organic coriander for the grand sum of RM0.85!
There are altogether 3 brands of organic vegetables at Jusco supermarkets – Zenxin, ABM Greenhill and Suan Mokkh. Plus, there is Grace Cup which is compost grown.
So now, two of the brands are available here, Zenxin and Grace Cup.
From my experience, the best quality organic vegetables come from Suan Mokkh but prices are somewhat higher. A Google search tells me that Suan Mokkh is a Buddhist meditation retreat in Southern Thailand. I am not sure if the organic vegetables come from the same place, but they certainly look good and have very strong energy.
One of my friends is able to sense it by placing his hands over the vegetables and he tells me that Suan Mokkh veggies have stronger energy than Zenxin.
So do look out for these if ever you go to JB. There are Jusco supermarkets at Terbrau City, a huge shopping mall at Johor Jaya, and also at Permas Jaya and Taman University.
Or pop by the vegetable wholesale centre and look for Zenxin at Pasir Panjang. You can also find organic vegetables and fruits at:

Oh yes, Cold Storage has recently opened Naturally, an organic supermarket at Vivo City.
Anybody been there yet? Is it any good? Will drop by sometime and give my report.
But good or not, cheap or expensive, organic produce has certainly become a lot more widely available in Singapore. I remember when I first got interested in organic foods 20 years ago, there was about 1/2 an organic foods store – and nobody selling fresh organic foods and vegetables.

I have been to the Cold Storage Naturally, for some reasons, it also sells other stuff, which I don’t consider organic. Anyway, for the same item, it costs 10 to 50 cents more, I think we saw some which is $1 or more… same products from Giant costs CHEAPER!
Btw, there is one more organic shop at Great World City, B2, don’t know it name though.
Ah! My friend in HK told me about a similar “organic supermarket” there, also set up by the Dairy Farm International group that owns Cold Storage, Giant, etc. Ya, also sells non-organic stuffs.
So it’s the same thing here? Sigh.
I think the one at Great World City is called “Four Seasons.” I was doing a search on organic stores in SG and found this page. Can’t wait to explore all of them when I’m back in SG! The Demsey Road one sounds intriguing since I love that area.
And paying up to S$1 more for organic food really isn’t bad. The price differences in the US are about US$2-3 more for organic produce, per pound, sometimes more for certain items. It’s expensive to eat well here!

I believe Zenxin etc are certified organic. Anyway if use virgin land, ie never farmed, chemically fertilised or sprayed before, can qualify.
Zenxin also welcomes visitors. So those who are concerned can go look for themselves.
Grace Cup, on the other hand, does not claim to be organic but simply compost grown.

Out of the 4 organic vegetable brands sold at Jaya Jusco in KL, i.e. Grace Cup, Suan Mokkh, Zenxin and D’Lonek, I found only Zenxin is organically certified by the M’sian Government. Though it is not a big issue here in M’sia whether they are certified or not. However, as a consumer, I’m concern whether the veggies are really organic or at least free of chemicals or pesticides. I’m buying those veggies for my mother-in-law who is very ill. Anyone has any ideas on how to verify the genuiness of the products?
There is one organic farm in Bangi, GK Organic Farm, its website offers some information about the industry (a SWOT analysis conducted by them), worth reading.

I have been to Zenxin Organic Park, somewhere near Air Hitam(one of the tolls in highway). It is convincing as they welcome visitors to view the whole process. They will provide in-house guide to tour you around upon request
Organic is not just chemical free. it has to combine with Non-Contaminated Water, non-toxic soil and pollution free.
Organic farm with surrounding non-organic farm will have to provide a buffer zone surrounding area around thier farm according to the IFOAM standard to qualify being certified organic.
Certified organic farm or produce carry a logo of the certify body on their packing as well as display in their farm or retail outlet.
Hope this information helps to clarify consumers’ doubt about the organic veg or fruits they are buying is the real thing!
High time government should step in to restrict the word ORGANIC being misused and misleading customer.
The next time you go farm visit, jusstify the farm qualify all of the above.
One of Zenxin farm was award organic conversion by NASAA
Australia certify body recently. The problem is I not sure which farm, I do not think it’s the one at Kluang near to road side because that a paint manufacturing plant just opposite the farm.
Zenxin has 3 farms currently under NASAA certification.
Farm 2 – Lojing Highland,Kelantan is only in PRECERTIFICATION stage (initial stage of conversion).
Farm 1 which is located at Simpang Renggam,Johor is IN-CONVERSION.
Farm 3 which is at Batu Pahat,Kluang,Johor is IN-CONVERSION.
As this is their first year of inspection,NASAA will
inform certain guidelines for Zenxin to follow strictly.If by the next inspection – 1 yearlater, these guidelines were not followed, Zenxin will not
obtain the IN-conversion cert for farm 2, and the
ORGANIC cert for farm 1 & 3.
NOTE:None of their farms in Cameron Highlands are under certification process.
NOTE:There is no excuse for self claimed organic
farms not to apply for inspection as they cannot
claimed themselves organic unless a certification body say so. These are the farmers(some call them
selves pioneers)that cause the erosion of the organic
market by encouraging overnight organic produce as

There are so far only 2 fully certified organic farms by NASAA in M’sia.
Loh’s Organic Veg.Garden(LOVG)located in Semenyih, Selangor who retails their certified farm’s produce to selected Giant Supermarkets around Klang Valley – has been growing vege for 10 years.
Titi Eco Farm Resort located in Titi,Negri Sembilan.
This is an intergrated organic farm resort. Their
organic produce are usually sold to organic shops and cater for home deliveries around Klang Valley.
Suan Mokkh Organic is not connected in any way to
the Buddhist Medication retreat in Thailand. Their
farm is in Bukit Pelandok, Negri Sembilan but is not
certified – quite a recent farm growing lowland vege. Suan Mokkh is more into wholesale business (cameron Highlands produce).Grace Cup has not claimed to be organic so is not – compost grown and
even ‘organically grown’ does not mean that the farms are following organic standard.
On the safe side, it’s best to look for vege/produce
from CERTIFIED ORGANIC Farms especially for the sick.

In GK Organic Farm, one of the oldest organic farm in Malaysia, it is truelly organic and the most conservative organic farm in malaysia and it involve alot of labor…Thus the vege produce is in high energy and stay for longs……as i personally experience itself …welcome for inquires
It is great to share with the info as above. And I believe the fertilizer that in use must be organic type. As claim by the US organic farmer, the worm casting / vermiculture type organic fertilizer will be the best source for organic farming.

Zenxin belongs to a factory chicken group. To them organic is just business. Real passionate organic guys are GK and this guy I just found: dqfarm.blogspirit.com
Zenxin’s male layer chicks are grown and passed off as “organic” chickens in Malaysia. They do that by sticking their organic veg sticker on the chicken bags.
Zenxin started with only one tiny farm certified but gets the rest from non-certified contract farms.
I stay clear from overly commercialised farms.

Zenxin obtained their SOM in 2007 for a 10 acre plot in Johore. Based on that they sold tons of “organic” vegetables throughout the country and everywhere they stick a copy of the SOM cert to ‘prove’ their veg is certified by the Malaysian Government. Now for their chickens, they stick their vegetable stickers on to the chicken packing so that consumers assume that the chickens are organic.
Certification is not the answer. NASAA and SOM comes once a year. During the year, someone out to cheat can and will do so. Organic certification is based on trust.
As consumers we should not pass the “buck” to certifiers. We must meet the farmer, as it was when the organic movement first started, we must take back the responsibility of ensuring that we provide clean food to our children. If we can’t meet all the farmers, then we must use NGOs or suppliers whose business model is to ensure that the food is safe and clean.
In Malaysia, one such business is http://www.good4u.com.my. I have read about them, met them and am assured that they are doing a decent job.

Q1 & Q2. Zenxin has three farms with total area of 210 acres and our total production can definitely achieve the quantity we sold to the market, which is auditted once a . Please wake up your mind and update yourself with us. We welcome you to Zenxin Organic Park in Kluang and we may educate you more about ourselves. If you are sincerely the fan of organic food.
Q3. There is no GMO in organic food and We do not sell GMO Sweet Corn and please be responsible for your question.
Q4, Q5. We do not label the chicken we sell as ORGANIC and definitely not processed with sodium hypochloride. Please read the label carefully before you put up your accuse. There is no one producing Certified Organic chicken in Malaysia at this moment because it is very hard to get the organic feed for chicken to be qualified as organic chicken. Please also be clear that the chicken “Fed On Organic Grass Field” and “Grass Fed”

You claim your sweet corn are not GMO, ok, please scan and upload your certificate from the supplier of your seeds. I am sure the blog owner will accomodate. I challenge you.
There is one certified organic chicken in Sarawak. The chickens are free-ranging and fed non-GMO corn grown on their own land.
Your tone is one of condescending, as if we do not know anything and need you to ‘teach’ us. We prefer to visit organic farms throughout Malaysia as a matter of interest without letting owners know, though we make it a point to meet owners and query them.
Your Mr. Tai has been elusive however.
Do not assume that I have not been to your farms, your offices and met with your managers, and have not seen with my own eyes, before I made those comments online. I AM responsible, that is why I chose to go online to reach those most affected.
Clean up your act, and I will stop. Let your operational decisions be made by “real” organic farmers, people like Gan of GK, and not businessmen.

I read one of the replies about certifier audit only once a year and in between farmers can cheap if choose to.
Yes, organic farming is primarily on INTEGRITY. Not all commercial organic farmers only go after $.
I found one certified organic farm in Pahang who has great passion for organic farming and they planted on large acrage with tropical fruits and vegetables. The farm is quite new. They applied Nature Farming method from Japan. Please visit their website at http://www.kenkorealorganic.com
Thier farm are not open to public for visit. Only by appointment for Group visit. Reasons given were:-
1. Organic farm has to take precautionary steps to prevent viruses and diseases being brought into their farm. Naked eyes cannot see virus and disease. Their farm are gated.
2. At the moment their concentration is in organic farming and do not have the resources to entertaint visitors.
They are plans to allocated a place for visitors in the near future.
If consumers are used to organic produce, they can tell the difference of real organic produce which has the natural flavour, taste and crunchier.
Therefore, we as consumers should put pressure to those big players i.e. hypermarket & supermarket to have separate counters for ‘Certified organic” and ‘Natural’ for non certified produce. Consumers please check on the so=called ‘ABC organic selection’, is it certified???

Grace Cup is not certified but they are my preferred vegetables above some other certified brands. When I can find GK I certainly grab them, even when they were not certified. Certification do not mean that the vegetables produced are more nutritious. It just means they are grown without synthetic fertilisers and pesticides. Try Grace Cup and GK and you will know what I am talking about.
We have to move beyond industrialised organic agriculture, certified or not. Many certified farms in Malaysia contribute as much to global warming as conventional farms. They grow monocrops, they till the soil, they add nitrogen to the soil albeit from “certified organic sources” without realising the effect on global warming.
They run fossil-energy consuming warehouses, cold rooms and they burn much fossil fuel trucking their vegetables from Kelantan or Trengganu to Singapore.
I try to buy from small ‘local’ farmers.

Agreed with you about GK who has the passion and patient in organic farming. They are other farmers out they like GK. Not all big player in organic farming means they are not passionate about organic and will take short cut.
Certification is one way to compliance of standards. However, organic farming primarily is about integrity.
Yes, brands like Grace Cup have value even though not organic.
Whenever I see them, I also buy from Indonesian ladies from Batam, who squat by roadside selling chilli, petai, etc. Their stuffs are quite obviously “organic” even though not certified.
I doubt if they can afford pesticides, though I may be wrong. But their veggies are obviously not grown with chemical fertilisers. Eg chilli are very slim, vs chemical type which are all fat and bloated!

The slim chilli and the fat chilli may have more to do with the hybrid used.
I was fortunate sometime back to visit DQ Farm and the owner educated me about modern hybrids and how they are nitrogen-demanding and hence ‘trap organic farmers’ to competing with conventional farmers on their (conventional farmer’s) turf. That was the first time I have heard of this perspective anywhere.
He ask us to avoid the super sweet papayas and other fruits that are damaging to our hormonal system (sudden flush of sugar from these super sweet fruits that are unnatural), whether organic or otherwise.
I find it enlightening that ‘original’ seeds have less disease problems and require less nitrogen input into the soil, hence less requirement for high nitrogen fertilisers (albeit organic) and hence less global warming nitrous oxide being released in the process of making these organic fertilisers and using them.
So keep buying that slim chilli and if possible also the less sweet papayas and bananas that you find growing in the villages. Remember the first dragon fruit 10-15 years back, and the dragon fruit now? For your health and mitigate global warming, buy the original dragon fruit.

Fully agree that original seeds are better. And now that you mention about dragon fruits… it is probably the only fruit that tastes better today than before. Most other fruits, especially rock melon / honey dew family have become tasteless nowadays.
The reason for tasteless fruits and vege due to
artificial fertiliser input that speed up their growth. Just like growth hormone. Very common to hear of the taste of kampong chicken compare to those farm chicken.
The real organic produce will have the original flavour and the sweetness intact.
Wonder you guys taste dragon fruits that have a kind of strong artificial flavour that turns you off. Commonsense tells us that this kind of flavour is not natural.
I agreed that hybrid and the ‘clone’ (wait till they clone human beings) things are unnatural. People nowadays die of sickness (cancer so common) and only small number die of old age. All this are contributed to we human trendy hitech creations. Everything is Instant, so end up human life become instant too.

Organic farming and the environment
On the way to Endau-Rompin National Park, I passed by the Zenxin Organic Farm which is situated right beside the busy Kluang road.
I have seen “organic produce” from Zenxin sold in supermarkets and had always assumed that it was organic as labelled. But now that I have seen the location of the farm, I am deeply suspicious. It is probably farmed without the use of pesticides, but organic?
Organic farming is said to be more energy-efficient, but some have claimed that if all farms were to cultivate their produce organically, they would not be able to produce enough fruit to feed everyone on the planet.
On the other hand, organic farming increases soil fertility so that the land can be reused, as chemicals and pesticides destroy soil nutrients.
So what do you think? To go for organic farming or not?

Hahaha.. there’s a diff between ‘commercialised’ organic farming and the others. Korean and Japanese Nature Farming replenishes the soil. So does biodynamic farming.
Zenxin’s methods most probably requires lots of inputs.
But for the consumer who’s concern about pesticide and chemicals, I supposed Zenxin’s will do.
For those of us looking for nutrients for our body and our soul, then Zenxin’s would be the organic version of junk food. Organic Junk Food 🙂

BTW in a recent posting on dq farm’s blog they mentioned that they have 60 earthworms in one cubic foot of soil. Now that’s fertile. That is the type of result organic farming should produce.

Hey! No laughing matter! Of course there is organic junk food, eg Organic Canola Oil.
A lot of organic granola bars, energy bars etc are, in my opinion, also organic junk foods. I don’t feel good after eating them.
My macrobiotic teacher once remarked: “If you take plenty of organic meat, organic milk and organic chocolate, you will develop organic cancer!”
Commercial organic farm do go for biodynamic farming method too. It is effective and proven. Try out the produce which I recommend in my earlier posting and see the difference.
Agreed about presence of worms in soil is a sign of fertile soil. That is where vemicompost comes about, just business commercialise it.
Any chemical substance added to soil or foliar spray will end up in the soil too. Hence killing the worms.
Junk food regardless it is organic or conventional is not healthy.
Back to Nature before it is too late.

purchase a cup of dragon fruit juice @ RM3.50. but total taste like a plain water with red coloring…so sad..

I have bought their veggies before and think it’s not too bad because there is some taste compared to all those vegetables from say, NTUC or even Shop n Save. The only problem is that I’ve some sort of neurological issues so my taste is all messed up, lol!
How about vegetables from Country Farm Organics? Are they really organic? I see them at Jusco supermarkets. They also sell plenty of dry organic items along with their organic fruits & vegetables.
